Doye Wayne Smith, 76, of Vidor, Texas died Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017 in Beaumont, Texas. A native of Ragley, he was a longtime resident of Vidor. Doye was a member of Eastgate United Pentecostal Church and a member of the International Longshoreman Association Local 21.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and was a wood craftsman and made walking canes. In his younger years he raised gardens and built two houses. Doye was a very giving person, a good husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his children and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his heart.

Visitation was held Friday, Dec. 8, beginning at 6 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 10 a.m. at Eastgate United Pentecostal Church. Interment was at Bivens Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Doye is survived by his wife of 57 years; Eva Ann Smith of Vidor; three sons, Karl W. Smith and wife Billie Rose of Spurger, Texas, John E. Smith and wife Karen of Hemphill, Texas and Gilbert Lee Smith and wife Patricia of Vidor. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Donna Holliman, Dorothy Dempsey and Dollie Courtney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert Lee and Violet Smith.

Gayle Warren Shirley, 81 of DeQuincy was born Dec. 23, 1935 in DeRidder and passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017 in DeQuincy.

He is survived by his daughter, Rita LeBleu DeQuincy; sons, Jack Shirley and Jamey Shirley, both of DeQuincy; sister, Frankie Travis of DeQuincy; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Florence Shirley; daughter, Tonya Shirley; son, Joby Shirley; and brother, David Shirley.

The family received friends on Monday, Dec. 11, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church, 4811 Wes Berry Road, DeQuincy with a 2 p.m. funeral service with Rev. Jordan Doyle officiating; Interment followed at Perkins Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.

Freddie Lee Dines, a resident of DeQuincy was born on Sept. 19, 1947 and passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017 at the age of 70.

He is survived by his grandsons, Hayward Burley, Jr., Lee Dines and Moses Dines, all of DeQuincy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Lee Dines and Edna Thomas; his wife, Clara Dines; and his daughter, Lawanda Dines.

The family received friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9. The visitation and funeral were held at SureHouse Ministries, 230 Jefferson Street, DeQuincy. Pastor Viney Silas officiated.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.

Rev. Daniel Ray Perego, Sr., 86, a resident of Ragley passed away on Monday, Dec. 4, 2017.

He served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1950- 1953. He was a graduate of McNeese University and briefly taught High School English before entering the Ministry. His Ministry included Maplecrest Baptist Church, Vidor, Texas, Crossroads Baptist Church, Toomey, First Baptist Church, Devers, Texas, Hopewell Baptist Church, DeRidder, First Baptist Church, Kinder, First Baptist Church, Anacoco, and Faith (formerly Kernan) Baptist Church, Ragley.

He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing. He loved his family and they will greatly miss him.

He is survived by his son, Duane and wife Kellie Perego of Spring, Texas, five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Adelene Perego; and two sons, Daniel Ray Perego, Jr. and Vernon Darrell Perego.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, beginning at 10 a.m. at Riley Smith Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Rev. Bill Smith will be officiating Interment will follow a Hagar Cemetery in Ragley.

Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 West Fourth Street, DeQuincy.

Dr. Donald James Hall died early Tuesday morning, Dec. 5, 2017 at his home in Baton Rouge. He was 88 and a native of DeQuincy.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a United Methodist Minister for over 60 years, serving numerous ministerial appointments, a district superintendent and served on numerous conference boards. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Centenary College, performed ministerial course studies at Emory University and SMU and received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from Centenary College.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy K. Hall; daughter; Donna Constant and husband Dr. William D. Constant of St. Francisville; son, Kenneth W. Hall and wife Fay C. Hall of Baton Rouge; stepdaughter, Pamela Warner of Covington; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Blankenbaker Hall; son, Richard L. Hall; parents, Fred and Irene Hall; and four siblings.

Memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 9, at Broadmoor United Methodist Church.

Betty Jeffers, 76, died at her home on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017.

Survivors are her husband, Leon Jeffers of Sulphur; a daughter, Dina Eanes and husband Donald of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; a brother, Tony Frye of Ragley; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William, Sr. and Lucille Frye.

Mary Elizabeth Doyle, affectionately known as “Nug”, has passed away at the age of 77 on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 in the comfort of her own home.

Ms. Doyle retired from the United States Post Office where she enjoyed her daily rural route. After retiring she enjoyed her role as a grandmother and cooking for her family.

Ms. Doyle was born in DeQuincy to Werner and Sylvia Land on Sept. 17,1940. She had four sons, Derek, John, Cecil, and Jeff Doyle; two daughters, Amy and Trina Doyle; seven brothers, Werner, Harry Lee, John Donald, James, Robert, Winston, and Bill Land; three sisters, Irma Rizzi, Katherine Perkins, Sharon Rozas; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Diane Shrope Clifton, a resident of Leesville was born on May 12, 1947 in DeQuincy and passed away on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017 in DeQuincy at the age of 70.

Diane was a member of Mystic Baptist Church in Fields.

She is survived by her children, Dorothy Brown of Elizabeth; Melissa Shrope Beatty and husband, George of DeRidder and Jimmy Shrope and wife, DeeDee of Fields. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Taylor Brown Habisreighter and husband, Joseph, Tori Brown, Alexis Allen and husband, Garrett, Bryce Shrope and wife, Summer, Sloan Shrope, Grayson Beatty, Justin Shrope and Joshua Shrope and wife, Elisa along with 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Patricia Gore of Fields and Mary Pierce and husband, Sam of DeQuincy; brothers, Rayburn Pickering and wife, Nancy of Jasper, Texas and Lee Arnold Pickering and wife, Linda of Lake Charles; sisters-in-law, Verna Pickering and Kathy Pickering, both of Singer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Elouise Pickering; husbands, James Shrope, Sr., the father of her children, and Albert Clifton; infant daughter Shrope; brothers, Elton Pickering and Ross Pickering; and son-in-law, Robert Brown.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Thursday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral service at Riley Smith Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. at Riley Smith Funeral Home. Rev. Danny Perry and Rev. Lewis King will be officiating. Interment will follow at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields.

Pallbearers will be Albert Pickering, Petey Pickering, Richard Pickering, Mike Pickering, Schuyler Gore and Kevin Pierce.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ramsey Pickering, Caleb Gore, Micah Pickering, Brady Vige, Trapper Pierce, Cotton Pickering, Rodney Pickering, Billy Pickering and Keith Pickering.
