Patricia L. “Patsy” Wells, 79, a resident of DeQuincy, was born on Dec. 13, 1938 in Bessmay, Texas and passed away on Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 at her residence in DeQuincy. She was a longtime resident of Buna, Texas before moving to DeQuincy.

She is survived by her five children, George Wells, Jr. and wife, Cindy of Lumberton, Texas, Donald Wells and wife, Ginger of Tenaha, Texas, Edward Wells of Buna, Texas, Richard Wells and wife, Shannon of Kirbyville, Texas and Deborah Wells Matherne and husband, Charley Matherne, Jr. of DeQuincy; along with eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother; and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Gossett and Audrey Warner and husband, George Wells, Sr.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Mar. 3, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of DeQuincy. The family will have a private burial at Sudduth Bluff Cemetery, Newton County, Texas.

Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.

Melissa Brindley, 55, a resident of Starks passed away on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018.

She is survived by her son, William Derek McKay and wife, Jettie of Starks; granddaughter, Taylor McKay; parents, Eric Brindley and Mary Lorene Phillips Brindley; brother, David Brindley and wife, Vickie of Starks; sister, Debbie Brandon and husband, Michael of Starks; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

The family received friends on Saturday, Feb. 24, beginning at 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. The visitation and funeral were held at The First Baptist Church of Starks with interment following at Doyle Cemetery in Starks. Pastor Ron Butler officiated.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.

Linda Faye Wilson Burch, 68, a native of Deweyville and a resident of Orange, Texas passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018.

She is survived by her children, Tammy Frederick and fiance’ Jay Harmon of Lafayette and Scotty Wilson, Sr. and wife, Angie of Orange, Texas; along with four grandchildren, Hailey Martin and husband, Nathan, Joshua Hoffpauir, Scotty Wilson, Jr. and Ruby Wilson; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents John Henry Wilson, Sr. and Selenium Mahailia (Bill) McCall; one brother, Junior Wilson; and one sister, Frances Wilson.

The family received friends at Riley Smith Funeral Home in DeQuincy on Friday, Feb. 23, from 12 noon until the beginning of the funeral service at 1 p.m. The family will have a private interment.

Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 West Fourth Street, DeQuincy.

Agatha Higginbotham McMillan, 92, of Lake Charles, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2018 at her home.

She was born in the Higginbotham community and settled here in Lake Charles, from Opelousas in 1959.

Survivors include seven children, Peggy McMillan Rosteet of Lake Charles, Dr. John E. McMillan of Ragley, Charles McMillan and wife Ginnie of Lake Charles, Gerald McMillan of Lake Charles, Marleen McMillan Zakovich and husband Paul of Denver, Colo., Lisa McMillan Verrett and husband David, Kathy McMillan Armentor of Biloxi, Miss.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters, Liz Latiolais of Lafayette, and Mary Ann Leleaux, of Crowley; and brother, Patrick Higginbotham of Morse.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Agatha (Guidry) Higginbotham; and husband, John J. McMillan.

She has been a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church for 47 years.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Saturday, Feb. 24. Burial followed at Prien Memorial Park. The Rev. Nathan Long officiated.

A Celebration of Life Service for Emma Laura “CheeChee’ Tallant Cole, 92, of Ragley will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Magnolia Baptist Church in Ragley.

Rev. David Free and Rev. Norman Ellis will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.

Visitation was held from 5-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at Magnolia Baptist Church and resumed again from 9 a.m. until time of the service.

Emma Laura, “Chee Chee”, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. She was born in Emhouse, Texas to Eula and James Frank Tallant on Oct. 2, 1925.

She had lived in Ragley for 60 years. She was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church and had been the church secretary for over 20 years. She was also a member of Magnolia Chapter #232 Eastern Star for over 50 years. She was a supporter of South Beauregard Athletics and could always be found at the basketball and softball games.

She and Outher enjoyed many years of traveling around the country going to Bluegrass festivals. She was a domestic engineer before there was ever such a term. She was the silent strong force in our family and had a big heart in a small body. If you knew “Chee Chee”, then you witnessed the love of God.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas Earl Cole (Shirley) of Amarillo, Texas, David Lee Cole (Ann) of Belle Chasse, Michael Ray Cole (Ellen) of Ragley, and one daughter, Casandra Cole Girola (Dino) of Ragley.

She had 11 grandchildren, Thom Frazier-Cole (Joseph), Laurie Cole Holcombe (Coy), Beki Cole Denison, Michael J. Cole (Amanda), Melissa Cole Priest (Alex), Denise Cole Rehm (Gannon), Cherie Cole Naquin (Jeremy), Malia Rae Cole, Lee Thomas Cole, David Girola (Becky), and Eric Girola (Lacy); and 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Thomas Tallant of Benbrook, Texas; and a sister, Nancy Warren of Palestine, Texas as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members. She is also survived by the long time family friend and her sidekick, Julius Miller.

She was preceeded in death by her husband of 53 years Outher W. Cole; an infant son, James Allen Cole; three great-grandchildren, Marcy Priest, Emily Naquin, and Brooks Girola; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Collins Cole; and two brothers, James Ray Tallant and Billy Tallant.
