Miller named to Hall of Fame
At a banquet held Thursday, June 5, at Treasures of Marilyn, Shady Patton, President-Southwest Louisiana High School Sports Hall of Fame Inc., announced the names of the six 2008 inductees to the Hall of Fame: Janessa Doucet of Iowa High School, Joe Duhon, III of Washington-Marion Magent High School, Alton Colt Fisher of Sulphur High School, Briana Horton of Fairview High School, Andrea Elizabeth Miller of Starks High School and Jace Peterson of Hamilton Christian Academy.
Andrea Miller was born in Sulphur. She is the daughter of Jack and Lena Miller and has one sister, “Gabby”. Andrea is the granddaughter of Donald and Martha Miller of Starks and Adam and Louise of Vinton. During her career at Starks High School. Andrea had many accomplishments in basketball, softball and track.
Being from a smaller school, she has participated in varsity athletics since sixth grade. In 2004, she was the 6-C District MVP in softball, second team All-District in basketball. In 2005, Andrea was a three-sport letterman. She was the District 6-C MVP in softball and was named to the All-State team.
In basketball, she was named 1st team All-District. In 2006, she was again a three-sport letterman was second team All-State in basketball and All-State in softball. In 2007, she was district MVP and first team All-State in basketball.
In track she was the Region II-C 100-meter and 200-meter champion and was 4x100 Relay State Champion. In softball she was again All-State. In 2008, Andrea was the 8-C District MVP in basketball and was named to the All-State Team. In track she was the 100-meter champion. In softball, she was the district 7-C MVP and first team All-State.
Andrea was named Starks High School Female Athlete of the Year 2004-2008, and her basketball jersey and softball jersey were retired. In addition to all of her athletic accomplishments she was named 2007-2008 Starks High School Student of the Year and graduated Summa Cum Laude. Andrea will continue her career playing basketball at Northwestern University.
Plaques with the inductees’ names and photos will be displayed year-round on a Wall of Honor outside J. C. Penney’s in the Prien Lake Mall. The Wall of Honor ceremony was held Tuesday, June 10, at 10 a.m. at the mall. Plaques are also given to each inductee and to his or her high school.
The purpose of the High School Sports Hall of Fame is to recognize Southwest Louisiana high school seniors who have distinguished themselves in the field of athletics either by virtue of their accomplishments on athletic teams or by meritorious effort on behalf of athletics. The Selection Committee, under the chairmanship of Ron Hayes, had the responsibility of choosing the men and women who were honored from a field of forty-three nominees. Serving with Mr. Hayes on the Selection Committee were Jennifer Fawvor, Glenn Duhon, Jamie Bice, Dinah Landry, Richard Louviere, Lilly Vincent, Tommy McClelland II, Clifton Hebert, Morris LeBleu, Philip Tarver, Bobby Wallwork, Richard Dow, Hahn Vu and Scott Pendarvis.
