Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church

Rev. and Mrs. James Harris

Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church was the first Black church organized in DeQuincy in 1911 by Rev. Ambrose. Families who helped organize the early church were Dave Miller, Sr., the Stoudmires, and the Quillers.

The church was rebuilt in 1913 after being destroyed by a storm and again in 1958 after a fire.

Ministers who have served as pastors were Rev. Matthew Simmons (1914-1919), Rev. Groves (1919-1948) and Rev. Allen Gillespie (1948-1982). Rev. Willie Stevens was called to pastor the church in March, 1983. Evergreen is presently under the leadership of Pastor James B. Harris. Pastor Harris was called to the church in October, 1998.

Evergreen is presently a member of the New Light Association and the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc.

The church has served as an outreach center, a collection point for food, clothing and other goods to be distributed to needy families of the community.

This church was also the first school for Blacks as well as a meeting place for civic leaders and members of the community. The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) continue to meet monthly at the church.

The mission of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church has been to meet the needs of the community through worship, fellowship and discipleship. We invite you to join us as we lift up the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mission Statement

The mission of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church is to reach the unsaved through ministry, to introduce the unsaved to God’s plan to salvation through evangelism and to nurture the saved to spiritual maturity through worship, discipleship and fellowship.

Ministry

Serving humanity by identifying and meeting the needs spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give life a ransom for many” Luke 10:45

Evangelism

The Holy Spirit led proclaiming or communicating of the gospel of Christ Jesus in a way that it leads the unsaved to the decision to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior and to a productive membership in this Church.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor;” Luke 4:18

Worship

As the Holy Spirit leads us let us express our love, adoration and reverence for God in Praise, Prayer and Thanksgiving.

“Exalt ye the Lord our God, and Worship at his footstool; for His is Holy” Psalm 95:5

Discipleship

Let us become students of the Master Teacher Christ Jesus

“And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying” Matthew 5:2

Fellowship

Let us share common devotion and purpose as we are led by the Holy Spirit bonding to Christ Jesus and to one another.

“Not forsaking the Assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is: but exhorting on another; and so much the more, as we see the day approaching” Hebrews 10:25

The Gift of God

O the gift of God is eternal life
O the gift of God is eternal life
And the wages of sin is death
When I was seeking Jesus
And thought He couldn’t be found
The grace of God came in my soul
And turn me all around

O the gift of God is eternal life
O the gift of God is eternal life
And the wages of sin is death
When first I got converted

I had no doubts at all
But I’ve had so many crosses
That I feel the least of all

O the gift of God is eternal life
O the gift of God is eternal life
And the wages of sin is death
I wonder where’s my dear mother
She’s been gone so long
I think I hear her shouting
Around the Throne of God

O the gift of God is eternal life
O the gift of God is eternal life
And the wages of sin is death
Yonder comes my brother
Whom I loved so well
But by his disobedience
Has made his home in hell.
