Jerome “Jerry” Lorenz a lifelong resident of Oretta was born on May 23, 1942 and passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019 at the age of 77.
Jerry was known as the “Mayor” of Oretta. He was a kindhearted man. Each morning you would see him walking the neighborhood checking on neighbors to be sure they were alive and well. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working in the garden. He loved his family, especially his nieces and nephews who were the children he never had. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Jerry is survived by his sisters, Dorothy Fowler and husband, Eugene of Ragley, Evelyn Cooley and husband, Alan of DeRidder and Agnes Franklin of Oretta; godchildren, Jeffery Lynn Cooley, Darrell Wayne Cooley and Mary Cunningham; 18 nieces and nephews, 33 great nieces and nephews and 14 great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore Lorenz and Mary Kourtney Lorenz; siblings, Lucille Engbrock, Mildred Leal, Clarence Lorenz and Eugene Lorenz.
The family received friends from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, and will receive them again from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Riley Smith Funeral Home in DeQuincy.
The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Riley Smith Funeral Home with interment to follow in Oretta Cemetery in Oretta.
Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
