DeQuincy High Volleyball under new leadership

By Mike Streams

The Lady Tigers Volleyball teams at DeQuincy are under a new head coach that brings many years of experience to the team not only as a two time state champion in high school in the state of Colorado but as well as collegiate experience.

Karyn Clophus, the first year head coach, played at the University of Wyoming on a scholarship in volleyball and has finished her degree and collegiate volleyball career at the University of South Eastern in Hammond. She has coached as an assistant at DeQuincy Middle School as well as coaches The Cajun Elite Volleyball team.

When asked about her expectations for the Lady Tigers this year she stated “100 effort all the time.” As well, she said that the bar has been set high and the girls are giving it their all, day in and day out, to live up to her expectations. Coach Clophus stated that this is a great group of girls to work with.

If you get the opportunity to watch these young ladies under the leadership of the new coach please do as I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Tuesday night, the DeQuincy High School gym came alive as the Lady Tigers Volleyball team opened up their regular season schedule at home against the the visiting Jennings Lady Bulldogs.

The Tigers, under the new leadership of Head Coach Karyn Clophus, have set the bar high and no doubt have gotten off to a great start.

In the Junior Varsity game, the Tigers won 2 games (25, 19) and (25, 18) to 0 for the visiting Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Tigers were led by Jordylyn Barlow with 14 points and 6 aces and Katie Willis with 11 points and 7 aces.

Then, the Varsity team was anxious to get on the court and show the home crowd that they were ready to play. The Tigers were not to let the home crowd down by defeating the Bulldogs 3 games to 0 games (25, 18), (25, 12) and (25, 22).

The Lady Tigers were led on the court by Raleigh Granger’s 16 points and 3 aces, Halli Turnage with 14 points, Reci Reeves with 9 points and five aces. Defensive specialist or in volleyball terms Libero Kylie Grove is a force to be reckoned with while on the court. Grove brings many years of experience to the court as she has been playing since the sixth grade and is a junior this year. She plays hard on every serve and is determined to make the play regardless of how hard it may seem.

The Lady Tigers played at home Tuesday, Sept. 10, against Iowa and will host Leesville on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 5:30 p.m.
