James Brantley

James McHenry “Macky” Brantley, 79, of Centerville, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019 in Crockett, Texas. He was born James McHenry Brantley May 23, 1940 in DeQuincy, the only child, to Rutlin McHenry and Fay Christine (Rigmaiden) Brantley.

Macky married Melvene Whittington in 1971 and they shared 48 years together. He worked in many professions throughout his life including driving a truck and working as a heavy equipment operator. Before his health began to fail, he had most recently bought and sold timber for a living. When Macky became unable to work, he made sure to regularly check in on his children and grandchildren to inquire where they were working for the day and provide instruction (whether requested, or not) on how to do their job.

In his younger years, Macky enjoyed bull riding and going to the rodeo. Later in life, he looked forward to his daily trips to Hopewell Store to drink coffee and visit with the guys. He also enjoyed sightseeing. Macky was liked by all who knew him and loved dearly by his family.

Surviving family includes wife, Melvene Brantley of Oakwood, Texas; sons, Cork Brantley (Diane) of Buffalo, Texas, Shannon Dale “Bull” Brantley (Tina) of Ragley, and Kendall Brantley (Wendy) of Centerville, Texas; daughters, Mary Sue Duncan of DeRidder, and Kim Nichols (James) of Centerville, Texas and daughter-in-law, Kim Brantley of Starks. Macky is also survived by 22 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Macky was preceded in death by both of his parents; son, Pat Brantley and grandson, Kaleb Brantley.

Funeral services for Macky will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019 at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas. Rev. Ron Johnson will officiate the service and interment will follow in North Creek Cemetery in the Nineveh Community of Leon County.
