CITY COUNCIL
March 13, 2020
DeQuincy, LA
The City Council of the City of DeQuincy met in special session on Friday,
March 13, 2020 at 7:00p.m. at their regular meeting place located at 300 North Holly
Street, DeQuincy, Louisiana with the following members present: Ronda Jacobs, Judy
Landry, Denise Maddox. Mark Peloquin and Daisy Cole. Absent: None.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Mark Peloquin and the roll was called with the above result.
Mayor Smith gave an update on what he has learned from his weekly meetings with the Parish officials on the Covid-19 virus. What our Parish, our State and our Country are trying to do is flatten the curve. The only way we can do this is to self-isolate. Right now we have no cases in Calcasieu Parish but as more people are tested more cases will show up.
What we are being told is that 70 – 80 percent of us will get this virus but some cases will be so mild that we may not even know we have it. Others, depending on their health condition, will be more serious. The Governor has declared a state of emergency for Louisiana, cancelled public schools for one month and is stressing social distancing.
Denise Maddox explained the reason this emergency meeting was called was no different than when we called the emergency meeting called prior to the last hurricane threat.
We declare a state of emergency in case we incur any expenses we would not normally incur and therefore will be able to possibly recoup some of the expenses from the federal government. This is merely a legal step for paperwork.
Further, Mayor Smith advised DeQuincy will follow the guidelines of the Parish.
More than likely, there will be no more public meetings, unless there is another emergency, until this pandemic is over. For more information on the pandemic, you can go to the website, www.ldh.la.gov/coronavirus.
A motion was made by Denise Maddox and seconded by Ronda Jacobs that we issue emergency health proclamation for the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus outbreak.
Motion carried as follows: Yeas: Judy Landry, Daisy Cole, Denise Maddox, Ronda Jacobs and Mark Peloquin. Nays: None. Abstain: None.
There was No Public Input.
There being no further business to discuss, a motion was made by Ronda Jacobs and seconded by Judy Landry to adjourn the meeting.
