Edsel Johnson, Jr.

Edsel Ford Johnson Jr., 78, a native of Gary, Indiana and resident of DeQuincy, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2020 at DeQuincy Memorial Hospital in DeQuincy.

Edsel was a Carpenter by trade for over 50 years. He also worked for the DeQuincy Sheriff Department for over 25 years until he retired. He attended First Church of God in Christ in DeQuincy under the leadership of the late Bishop O.B. Pete Sr. for several years where he served as a Deacon and sang in the male choir. Edsel had a love for fishing and a passion for hunting. He enjoyed spending time with his family and lots of dancing.

He was a beloved Companion, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him and each life that he touched in his own special way.

Edsel Johnson was the son of the late Edsel Ford Johnson Sr. and the late Ruby Johnson.

He is survived by his companion of eight years, Ethel Connor of DeQuincy; three sons, Edsel Ford Johnson III and Stewart Spencer, both of DeQuincy, and Mark Johnson of Denver, Colo.; six daughters Kimberly Williams and her husband Pastor Johnathan Williams Sr. of Beaumont, Texas, Dawn Gardfrey of Houston, Texas, Carmen Malbrough and her husband Albert Malbrough of Welsh, Edith Spencer, Deidra Spencer, both of Lake Charles, and Lisa Spencer of DeQuincy; two sisters, Jackie Newsome of Houston, Texas and Leola Johnson of DeQuincy; over thirty grandchildren; over twenty seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of over thirty-six years, Theresa Johnson; daughter, Cathy Collins; son, Darin Johnson; sister, Lisa Johnson; brother, Lester Johnson; two grandsons, Reginald Spencer and Joshua Williams; and his precious dog, “Lady”.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 18, at Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home in DeQuincy. The Graveside service will be at Community Cemetery in DeQuincy. Pastor Johnathan L. Williams Sr. will be officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
