Nelda Jean Dickerson Smith was born Nov. 24, 1942 and passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022 at the age of 79.
Nelda loved sports, mostly baseball. She and her husband, Wiggie were involved in DeQuincy Dixie Youth for over 35 years. Nelda worked for 15 years as a security guard at Securitas. She loved the holidays: making sugar eggs, Easter baskets, stockings at Christmas, sugar cookies and popcorn balls. Nelda loved spending time with her sisters, she was always the life of the party! She loved her children but when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, her life revolved around them. She will be greatly missed by her family and her friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Prouty and husband “Hud”, Wilbern “Scooter” Smith and wife, Reba and Gordon Smith and wife, Jackie; six grandchildren, Teal Logue (Tawana), Julie Vita, Nathan Smith (Sidney) Cassie Smith, Ashton Smith (Lauren) and Savannah Smith (Eddie); and twelve great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Nancy Ashworth and husband Rabbit, Joyce Hester, Judy Marcantel and husband Bo and Roxanna Dickerson; brothers, Chuck Dickerson and wife, Deb and Mike Dickerson and wife Cheryl; her brother-in-law P. C. Miller; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wiggie Smith; parents, Nathan O. Dickerson and Olivia Phillips McDonald; sister, Vivian “Bootsy” Miller and brother, Nick Dickerson.
The family received friends from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, and the funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5. The visitation and funeral service will be held at Hargrove Bible Baptist Church, 1425 Hargrove Loop, DeQuincy. Bro Michael Streams will be officiating. Interment will follow at Hyatt Cemetery in Fields.
Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
